Bulgaria is located on about 3 hours flight from most UK airports, and 1-2 hours from any other European country. There are many local airports, out of which the best known are on the Black sea coast near Varna and Burgas. To both airports there are direct flights from many European towns during the summertime.
If you chose to travel by car you shall cross many countries. Until Vienna, if you are an EU citizen, you shall need no visa. However you might need one for Serbia and Montenegro, so best check with local embassy prior to travel. The best route to take is Vienna- Budapest – Belgrade – Sofia. Most of the route passes on highways and only a small part on first class roads. The distance from Vienna to Sofia is about 1 300 km. You may chose to buy insurance policy either previously or on border checkpoints. Rent-a-car offices provide services all over Bulgaria, but mostly in big cities. You should be cautiuos regarding the following speed limitations:
· 50 km/h within inhabited areas;
· 90 km/h outside inhabited areas;
· 130 km/h on highways.
· On the spot fines operate in Bulgaria.
